People.
Place.
Diversity.
Color. Music. Dance.
Work. Play. Celebration. Wit.
These are ingredients in Sy Mohr
art. His love for people of all races, colors, and nations shines
through his work. To Sy, this is the soul and essence of life. In a
career spanning nearly two-thirds of a century, he has brought his love
to life in more than 150 oil paintings, many of which are here in his
gallery for you to see and enjoy.
On
May 7, 2008,
DESIGN à la Carte
hosted a reception for Sy Mohr in Annapolis, Maryland,
featuring Sy's private art collection and including his life-size mural
of "Woodstock." The gallery is now offering many of Mohr’s original
paintings plus prints of “Woodstock,” “Ocean City,” “Solomons Island,”
“The Band,” “Madonna,” “Cape Cod,” “ Success,” “ Provincetown,” and
“Mummers Parade.” The gallery offers art by Mohr and others,
photography, and custom framing. Mohr's
prints and originals are displayed on walls surrounded by
unique
furniture, hand-crafted furnishings, custom draperies, wall coverings,
upholstery, carpet, rugs, floorings, and interesting lighting. The
gallery offers designer-assisted shopping for the public and the design
trade.
Mohr has been dubbed "The Painter of Maryland" for his
many scenes of Annapolis, Ocean City, Solomons Island and Smith Island,
and other Maryland locales although his paintings depict much of the
country and world. Mohr is a long-time resident of the state.
On April 9,
Maryland
Public Television ARTWORKS This Week, hosts Rhea Feikin and Nate
Howard decorated the solon, where Feikin interviewed artists, with two
paintings by "Annapolis-based Sy Mohr." They displayed four other
paintings to publicize Mohr's exhibition at Maryland Hall for the
Creative Arts (see below).
. A
solo exhibition of fifty paintings by Annapolis-based, contemporary
painter Sy Mohr will run from March 30 through May 9, 2008, at
Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, 801 Chase Street
in Annapolis, Maryland, in the balcony gallery. The exhibit opens in

"Annapolis," which had been on display at Lowe's Hotel on West Street in
Annapolis, will be included in the Maryland Hall exhibit.
In February 2008, Mr. Mohr received a personal letter
from Presidential candidate John McCain saying that while in Annapolis
attending his Naval Academy class reunion, "I will make a point to study
your paintings."

2008 for display in the U.S. Embassy in Banjul in The Gambia, a small

Senegal. In his 1977 Pulitzer Prize-winning book Roots: The Saga of an
American Family, Alex Haley's ancestor Kunta Kinte traveled from The
Gambia to slave auction in Annapolis.

In January, 2002, the
Art in Embassies Program (AIEP) of the United States Department of State requested the
artist's "participation for exhibitions we are curating...of
original artwork by American artists in the residences of the United
States Ambassadors worldwide. Ambassadorial residences serve as the
center for official state functions overseas and exhibitions become a
part of the Ambassador's cultural mission at Post..." The artist
loaned three of his paintings for a period of three years. "The
Peace March" (Happenings, "Peace March (Right)", the right
hand panel of the three-panel painting) was displayed from 2002 to 2005 in the
U.S. embassy in Kigali, Rwanda
(see Exhibitions), scene of the bloody 1994 genocide that killed 800,000
people. "Indian
Festival" and "Indian Wedding" were displayed in the
U.S. embassy in
